Heritage Inventory Significance: F. BLIGHT AND CO STORE, AT 236-238 KING STREET, IS A THREE STOREY BLUESTONE STORE ERECTED IN 1858 FOR CLEVE BROTHERS. THE ARCHITECT WAS LEONARD TERRY. THE BUILDINGS NOW SERVE AS A RESTAURANT. THIS IS ONE OF THE OLDEST WAREHOUSES SURVIVING IN THE C.B.D. THE INTACT DRESSED BLUESTONE FACADE TO KING STREET IS TYPICAL OF WAREHOUSE ARCHITECTURE OF THIS EARLY PERIOD. THE UTILITATIAN REAR FACADE IS NOT SO INTACT AND IS OF LITTLE ARCHITECTURAL MERIT. THE BUILDING AS A WHOLE FORMS AN INTERESTING GROUP WITH THE NEIGHBOURING BLIGHT AND CO STORE AND THE SEABROOK BUILDING IN LONSDALE STREET, AND IS ONE OF THE FEW SURVIVORS OF A LARGE NUMBER OF WAREHOUSES THAT WERE COMMON IN THIS PART OF THE CITY. THE EXTERNAL FACADES ARE THE IMPORTANT FEATURES OF THIS BUILDING AND THEY ARE INTACT. OF STATE SIGNIFICANCE.
