This place is included on the Victorian Heritage Inventory, for its potential to contain historical archaeological remains associated with the settlement and growth of early Melbourne. Under the terms of the Heritage Act 2017 there is protection for all historical archaeology sites and objects in the state.

135-137 SWANSTON STREET - Heritage Inventory Description
First land sale 1837, Block 12, Allotment 10, purchased by Charles Swanston. This allotment built on by 1839 (not neccessarliy this site). 1877 - Three buildings, one- to three-storey auctioneers and yard. 1888 - three-storey building (new), five shops tobacconist, boot warehouse, bookshop, steam engraving workshop. 1905 - six-storey building, Canns Limited.
