Statement of Significance

This place is included on the Victorian Heritage Inventory, for its potential to contain historical archaeological remains associated with the settlement and growth of early Melbourne. Under the terms of the Heritage Act 2017 there is protection for all historical archaeology sites and objects in the state.

      11-19 BANK PLACE - Heritage Inventory Description

      First land sale 1837, Block 14, Allotment 5, C Ebden. Building by 1840 by William Meek. Between 1855 and 1877 'Eldone Chambers' constructed,two storeys and outbuildings. 1905 - new building, printing office and warehouse.

      Heritage Inventory Significance: Citation - Notable Building (AM425): Originally a three storey office building constructed in c 1903, an additional two floors were added in 1925-26. The initial design was by Nahum Barnett. It is an impressive example of Romanesque design and a vital element of the Bank Place precinct.

    This building was erected in 1903 by Clement Langford to designs of Nahum Barnet. It was originally a printing works for Mason, Firth & McCutcheon, who were the official printers to the Melbourne diocese of the Church of England. References: The Argus, 2/2/1903, p.2: tender notice. Lewis Index (no.76913): MCC registration, 25/4/1903.
