Heritage Inventory Significance: REGISTER OF THE NATIONAL ESTATE - CITATION: THE AUSTRALIAN CLUB, 110 WILLIAM STREET, WAS FOUNDED IN 1878. THE PRESENT CLUBROOMS WERE ERECTED IN THREE STAGES. LLOYD TAYLOR WAS THE ARCHITECT FOR THE FIRST TWO STAGES, ERECTED 1879 AND 1884 WHICH COMPRISE 78 FEET OF THE WILLIAM STREET FRONTAGE. IN 1893 THIS FACADE WAS EXTENDED SOUTHWARDS AND THE FOUR STOREY RENDERED BRICK STRUCTURE WITH ATTIC AND BASEMENT WAS COMPLETED AS WE KNOW IT TODAY. THE ARCHITECT WAS J. CHARLESWORTH. THE AUSTRALIAN CLUB IS ONE OF MELBOURNE'S MOST DISTINGUISHED INSTITUTIONS AND HAS OCCUPIED THESE PREMISES FOR OVER A CENTURY. THEY ARE THE GRANDEST AND MOST INTACT VICTORIAN CLUBROOMS IN AUSTRALIA. THE PRINCIPAL FACADE IS A NOTABLE CLASSICAL EXAMPLE AND INCORPORATES ELEMENTS WHICH TYPIFY TAYLOR'S WORK. NOTABLE FEATURES INCLUDE THE PORTICO AND LOGGIA WHICH DATE FROM 1893 AND THE EXOTIC ROOF AND CUPOLA. THE MAGNIFICENT INTERIOR IS A SUPERB EXAMPLE OF VICTORIAN TASTE AND CRAFTSMANSHIP AND CENTRES AROUND THE GRAND STAIRCASE. EXTERIOR REQUIRES MAKING GOOD IN MANY PLACES. OF NATIONAL SIGNIFICANCE.
