Statement of Significance
This place is included on the Victorian Heritage Inventory, for its potential to contain historical archaeological remains associated with the settlement and growth of early Melbourne. Under the terms of the Heritage Act 2017 there is protection for all historical archaeology sites and objects in the state.

DR MARTINS - Heritage Inventory Description
Fourth land sale 1839, Block 10, Allotment 7, John Watson. 1850, 1866 - building on site. 1873 - townhouses,three- and two-storeys, built on site. Stone stables at rear. Used as doctors/dentists rooms. 1888 - two three-storey buildings, and two two-storey buildings to lane (stables); Dr A Seclenmeyer, Lugg & Clarke, Dentists. 1905 - same buildings (more extensions to yard); Dr A Cook; Lugg & Clarke, Dentists.
Heritage Inventory Significance: Owned and built by Dr Robert Martin in 1873 by James Gall. Martin was the occupant of Viewbank.SOURCE: NATIONAL TRUST. 86-88 COLLINS STREET MELBOURNE. THE NATIONAL TRUST STRONGLY SUPPORTS THE ADDITION OF THE ABOVE BUILDINGS TO THE REGISTER OF HISTORIC BUILDINGS, BELIEVING THEM TO BE OF STATE AND ARCHITECTURAL AND HISTORICAL IMPORTANCE. 1.CONSTRUCTED IN 1872, THESE BUILDINGS ARE OF AN EARLY DATE FOR TERRACE HOUSING WITH VERANDAHS AND BALCONIES DECORATED IN CAST IRON. THREE-STOREY TERRACES ARE COMPARATIVELY UNCOMMON IN MELBOURNE.2.DESIGNED BY THE NOTABLE ARCHITECT, JAMES GALL, THE BUILDINGS ARE DISTINGUISHED BY THE QUALITY AND ADVANCED CHARACTER OF THE FACADES. 3.THE TERRACE HOUSES, BUILT FOR MELBOURNE SURGEON DR. LAWRENCE J. MARTIN, HAVE IMPORTANT HISTORICAL ASSOCIATIONS WITH OTHER LEADING PHYSICIANS AND SURGEONS. THE TERRACE HOUSES ARE CLASSIFIED BY THE NATIONAL TRUST.
