Heritage Inventory Significance: SOURCE: FINDINGS FROM RECOMMENDATION TO MINISTER: EXTERNALLY, THIS IS A FINELY DETAILED AND WELL CONSIDERED EXAMPLE OF THE TWENTIETH CENTURY RENAISSANCE REVIVAL WITH A CHARACTER WHICH MAY BE TRACED BACK TO HARDY WILSON AND THE GEORGIAN INFLUENCE FROM SYDNEY. AS SUCH A.N.Z.A.C. HOUSE CAN BE COMPARED WITH THE EARLIER FRANCIS HOUSE AND VICTOR HORSELY CHAMBERS, NEXT DOOR. BOTH THESE BUILDINGS ARE SLIM IN PROPORTION WHILE A.N.Z.A.C. HOUSE IS MUCH BROADER IN PROPORTION AND MORE CLOSELY ALIGNED TO THE RENAISSANCE PALAZZO PROTOTYPE. A.N.Z.A.C. HOUSE CLEARLY DEMONSTRATES THE ARCHITECT'S KNOWLEDGE OF THE NEW MODERNISM (AS EXPOUNDED IN THE INTERIORS) ALONG WITH AN EMPATHY TO THE OLD STYLES FORMERLY STANDING AT THE TOP END OF COLLINS STREET. THE ARCHITECTS, OAKLEY AND PARKS, PROMINENT PROPONENTS OF THE "MODERN STYLE" IN MELBOURNE ARCHITECTURE WERE ANXIOUS TO POINT THIS OUT WHEN THE BUILDING WAS REVIEWED BY THE R.V.I.A. JOURNAL OF JULY/AUGUST, 1938. A.N.Z.A.C. HOUSE GAINS IN IMPORTANCE BECAUSE OF ITS RELATIONSHIP TO THE PRESENT SUUROUNDING BUILDINGS, BUILT BETWEEN 1872 AND 1928. IT IS AN ELEGANT AND REFINED FACADE TO COLLINS STREET.
