Statement of Significance
This place is included on the Victorian Heritage Inventory, for its potential to contain historical archaeological remains associated with the settlement and growth of early Melbourne. Under the terms of the Heritage Act 2017 there is protection for all historical archaeology sites and objects in the state.

TOMASETTI BUILDING - Heritage Inventory Description
First land sale 1837, Block 5, Allotment 2, J S Hill. 1850 - building on site. Stone warehouse constructed by William Degraves & Co., (merchants and millers) 1853. Described in ratebooks: "large stone warehouse, 5 stories high cellar steam engine Boiler long range of wood storehouse, 2 offices, backhouse of wood & brick of 9 rooms". Other occupants: Monckton, Synnot Woolbrokers (1877); Robert Harper & Co., Rice , Coffee & Spice Merchants; W Detmold, Bookbinding (1880s).1905 - six storey warehouse, Borsdorff & Co. (new floor & Facade)./nNB. Melbourne Herald 28.12.1855 - "F M White tenders for erection of engine house, boiler and stables for William Degraves" (no location given) also - Australasian Builder 21.1.1860 - "Construction in progress of de Graves's store in Flinders Lane east. Contractor Linacre & Beadle"
Heritage Inventory Significance: CITATION - NOTABLE BUILDING (AM425): THE LOWER FIVE STORIES OF THIS BUILDING ARE THE REMNANTS OF A HUGE STONE WAREHOUSE AND FLOUR MILL BUILT BY WILLIAM DEGRAVES & CO IN 1853. IN 1905 THE STRIKING POLYCHROME ART NOUVEAU FACADE WAS ADDED AND A NUMBER OF ADDITIONAL FLOORS TO CONVERT THE BUILDING TO A SHOWROOM AND OFFICES. THE BUILDING IS HISTORICALLY IMPORTANT FOR ITS ASSOCIATIONS WITH A VERY EARLY CITY INDUSTRY AND DEGRAVES (AFTER WHOM DEGRAVES STREET IS NAMED) AND IS ARCHITECTURALLY UNIQUE IN THE CENTRAL CITY IN THE DESIGN OF ITS FACADE.
