Former Gears Chemist - Physical Description 1
This building is of interest for the ornate classical facade at first floor level, combined with the "art deco" shop front, an alteration undertaken in 1931 to the design of Richards, Coburn & Richards Architects. The balustraded parapet surmounting the building has had its urns removed. Pilasters with Corintl capitals flank the building and support an elaborate bracketed cornice. The pedimented windows also have Corinthian pilasters and balustrades at sill level.
The central window has a lower sill level, presumably' to allow balcony access.
A dentillated string course separates the awning from the first floor.
The shop front has original lettering surviving. The lead light window strip is broken by vertical projecting "art deco" bands. This shop front provides an important example of an intact 1930's shop front. The building as a whole provides an important streetscape element.Former Gears Chemist - Integrity
