    Titanic Memorial Bandstand - Physical Description 1

    This bandstand was constructed in 1911 for the City of Ballarat. It was allegedly constructed, as a memorial for the band of the Titanic which so nobly played on without overtime. It is an octagonal bandstand which is, distinctive for its complex arrangement of interesting half hipped roofs with shingled hang gable ends and a lower skirt of lesser' roofs filling in the angles, all culminating in a square ventilation turret with a concave sheeted pyramidal roof and a weathervane with a representation of the Titanic forming the fin of the indicator. The roof is supported by 8 posts with curved brackets 'with circular spandrels. The bandstand has iron balustrades on seven sides as it is constructed dramatically on the cross fall of the median strip which is particularly well landscaped in this precinct.

    The structure is intact, although concrete and timber park benches have been introduced at a later period. It is unique as a bandstand because of its complex roof form and its sitting. It forms an important part of an environmental area of national significance.
