Nazareth House - Physical Description 1
Nazareth House was founded in 1888 by Bishop Moore as a home for orphans and the aged poor under the supervision of the Sisters of Nazareth. In 1889 architects Tappin, Gilbert and Dennehy produced plans for the present building constructed by 1891. In 1902, Reed, Smart and Tappin designed a brick chapel for the comp1 The main building is a three storey rectangle punctuated by two towers and a central gable marking the entrance. It is flanked by two wings ending in gables, reflecting the central motif. The ground floor windows are doubled with arched heads, single square headed windows are arranged regularly in the upper two levels. Above the roof line the towers have paired occu1i below a cornice line. Above the cornice is a pair of elongated openings with pointed arch heads below another cornice line that corbels out to the steep slate roof capped with a cast iron finial.
