Statement of Significance
National Estate Register:
A pleasing example of the standard courthouse design, dating from 1860. Source: Victorian Heritage Register - Smythesdale Courthouse was built by Bond and Company in 1860 for 911 pounds (contract number 60/48), although a plan of a more substantial building dated 3/12/66 and signed 'PK' (Peter Kerr) of the Public Works Department exists. The building is constructed of load-bearing red brick, of simple gabled rectangular form with a small hipped porch (now glazed in), rooms with a lower roof line at the rear and a side entry porch. The roof is of slate and the windows have bluestone sills and arched brick heards. Adjacent to the rear of the courthouse is a police stable building, and beyond that, a bluestone lock-up. This courthouse is one of seven 1860's Victorian courthouses with small projecting entry porches. A later addition butts on unsympathetically at one side at the rear of the building. Contracts for later work were built by Watts in 1863... And additions in 1871-2 let to J Milverton.... The paintwork is in poor condition, some brickwork is crumbling, and some windows have been bricked in, but otherwise the exterior features remain including some cast-iron downpipes.
