Statement of Significance
Architecturally, a good intermediately sized and externally complete example of Evan Smith's period as Chief Architect; the neo-Georgian public building style in Victoria being virtually confined to his ouvre; of regional importance.
Historically, locally important as an original and large public building, financed directly by the locality.

ESSENDON HIGH SCHOOL (FORMER) - Physical Description 1
Typical of designs prepared under Smith, this two level, stuccoed, neo-Georgian structure has bold compositional elements consisting of a heavy, broken pediment over the central bay, deep eaves bracketing and smooth rustication to pilasters all set against bland wall surfaces and austere detailing of the architraves and strings. Another simply conceived element is the Tuscan order porch. Marseilles-pattern terracotta tiles provide an unexpected dash of colour to the Dutch-hipped roof, whilst a complementary sombre green is lent by a contemporary cypress row nearby.
ESSENDON HIGH SCHOOL (FORMER) - Integrity
Generally original.
ESSENDON HIGH SCHOOL (FORMER) - Physical Description 2
Streetscape
A contrasting part of a dominantly red brick, Edwardian period complex, which itself contrasts with the generally later, adjoining residential development.
