HOUSE - Physical Description 1
A red brick Tudor revival styled, attic villa with characteristically steep gabled roofs, clad with slate rectangular window bays, pointed and flat arched openings and cemented hood mouldings to the upper windows.
Grouped cylindrical chimney pots are plated on wide dichrome chimney supports. Of particular interest is the Waratah-like plant motifs in the upper lights of the front window bay; the bay itself being a precursor of the later, suburban Queen Anne. Reputedly, original elements exist internally; providing an individual character which parallels with the exterior.
The design is typical of Robert Haddon's work for builder, G.B. Leith. G.B. Leith also performed as an architect (probably with Haddon's help) in the design of a house for David Elder in Riverview Road, during 1910. It is possible that Hadden may have designed Gowrie with Leith soon after his arrival in Melbourne during 1889. Alternatively, its occupancy by architect Solon Peck may also suggest his involvement and an American influence.HOUSE - Integrity
Generally original except for trim colour and replacement of the (presumed) picket fence with a high paling one; what may be terracotta chimney pots, have been painted (?); and the roof gables may have had finials.
