Statement of Significance
Architecturally, a near complete example of a small group of pre-boom (if not earlier) timber dwellings in metropolitan Melbourne with (if original) valuable detailing; of regional importance.
Historically, linked with the first dwellers (McNays and Davies) and the pastoral period in Essendon: of high local importance and regional interest.

The Elms - Physical Description 1
A twin, transverse gabled and verandahed weatherboard cottage with two 12 pane windows on either side of a toplit door. (It is possible that rooms have been added at either end and that the house once possessed only two front windows). The boarding has a beaded edge and the architraves have the fine mouldings associated with early houses. Similarly fine verandah posts, chamfered bressumer, and the scalloped timber brackets are of an early pattern, if not an early date. Three semi-mature elms (recently severely pruned) are at the frontage.
The Elms - Integrity
A sympathetic picket fence (if of a later pattern) has been put at the frontage; the verandah has been altered (itself probably an early addition), and its floor replaced with bricks; and the house has been painted a sympathetic colour.
