Statement of Significance
SIGNIFICANCE: »The focus for Presbyterianism not just for the Hamilton region but for much of the squatter dominated Western District. The church is an excellent example of the work of Clegg and Miller, Western District architects.
STATEMENT OF SIGNIFICANCE
St Andrew's Presbyterian Church
20 Gray Street
St Andrew's Presbyterian Church, which replaced an earlier church of 1857 on the site, was opened on 6 June 1909. ([i]) Its foundation stone was laid on 18 December 1907 by district pastoralist and senior trustee, James Thomson of Monwae. ([ii]) One of the largest country parish churches of Victoria, the present church was built of bluestone with dressings of Mt Abrupt freestone, to the designs of the Ballarat architects Clegg and Miller. ([iii]) The building comprises nave, double transept and spire, with elongated belfry and corner pinnacles, to the north-west. ([iv]) The church, which served a predominantly Scottish congregation of early settlers and distict pastoralists, continues as a focus for the Presbyterian church in the Western District. ([v])
The spire, along with that of its neighbour and that of St Mary's, is one of the landmarks of Hamilton. The church which is of regional significance is at the centre of the St Andrew's complex.
