Statement of Significance
The Marks Street precinct, comprising 1-11 and 2-10 Marks Street, Brunswick.
How is it significant?
The Marks Street precinct is of local aesthetic significance to the City of Moreland
Why is it significant?
Of aesthetic significance, as a completely intact and homogeneous early twentieth century residential precinct compising a largely unaltered collection of houses dating from 1911 to 1920, after which development ceased and changes appear to have been minimal. The street clearly illustrates the enduring popularity of the Victorian style of house design in Brunswick, continuing to be a favourite decades after it had been superseded elesewhere. Marks Street - Physical Description 1
Marks Street is an early twentieth century residential precinct. It comprises an intact group of double fronted single storey weatherboard cottages and villas that illustrate the subtle transition in styles from the Victorian to the Edwardian period and the 'survival' of elements of the Victorian style well into the Edwardian period. Typically, they have corrugated iron hip or gable roofs with separate verandahs (supported on square section or carved timber posts sometimes with cast iron lacework frieze) and many retain original chimneys. The houses share similar front and side setbacks and many have sympathetic (though not original) low timber fences to the front boundary.
The precinct is completely intact and all of the houses at 1-11 and 2-10 Marks Street contribute to its historic character.
Marks Street compares with Allan, Bruce and Warburton Streets, which all developed at around the same time and contain a similar collection of houses. Marks Street is the most intact of these streets.Marks Street - Physical Conditions
