How is it significant?
Fitzroy Villa, at 1 McKay Street, Coburg is of local historic and aesthetic significance to the City of Moreland.
Why is it significant?
Of historic significance as a now rare example of the first stage of suburban development in this area that was associated with the 'land boom' that followed the opening of the Coburg Railway in 1884. It demonstrates how early housing developed in proximity to public transport such as railways and later tramways. It also has associations with Harry Richards, who was locally known as a shopowner and Coburg Councillor and Mayor. (AHC Criterion A.4)
Of aesthetic significance as a relatively intact example of a boom style brick villa of unusual and individual design such as the elaborate parapet details, fenestration details, and cast iron verandah decoration. (AHC Criterion E.1)

FITZROY VILLA - Physical Description 1
Fitzroy Villa, 1 Mackay Street, Coburg is an unusual Victorian painted rendered semi-detached terrace which presents a double facade to Mackay Street. The left hand facade projects out from the right and features a decorative parapet with the relief 'FITZROY' and a large window with an elaborate bracketed window surround. The right hand facade is recessed and features a painted corrugated galvanised steel roofed verandah with a decorative cast iron lace frieze, a decorative parapet with the relief 'VILLA' and the main entrance.The house has a small window on the side and a elaborate painted rendered chimney at the front and an unpainted red brick chimney at the rear.
