Statement of Significance
The further development of the railway system demanded an urgent rail link between the Flinders Street and Spencer Street stations.
The line had to cross the wide and busy streets - Flinders, Spencer & Market streets. Queens (Falls) Bridge carried much traffic and it was clear that the Spencer Street Bridge would have to be built. Between Market & Spencer Street there was a need for access to the wharves. The viaduct solution to such a large engineering challenge was a bold concept. The size of the structure is significant.
