Statement of Significance
What is significant?
The house now known as 'Garryowen', constructed c.1886 and first occupied by Sarah Edmondsen, at 689 Mt Alexander Road, Moonee Ponds is significant.
Non-original alterations and additions to the house and the front fence are not significant.
How is it significant?
The house now known as 'Garryowen' at 689 Mt Alexander Road, Moonee Ponds is of local historic and aesthetic significance to the City of Moonee Valley.
Why is it significant?
It is historically significant as now rare example of a villa residence erected in Moonee Ponds during the land boom. While a number of these villas were erected many have now been demolished and the significance of this house is enhanced by its rarity value. (Criteria A & B)
It has aesthetic as a representative example of a very common villa form of its time, which is given individual identity by the intricate polychromatic pattems in the brickwork that emphasises salient elements of the design. (Criterion E)

HOUSE (GARRYOWEN) - Physical Description 1
An imposing polychrome brick two storeyed late Victorian villa with hipped tiled roof and symmetrical facade, emphasis being given to the openings by means of whites, the black body bricks being relieved with red and white courses. Further accent is given to the front door which has a round arched fanlight. The cast iron lace verandah has brick end walls and there is a tiled verandah floor with bluestone margin. It is in sound condition and has a high degree of external integrity.
