NORTH GRANT HOTEL - Physical Description 1
This building, constructed in 1893/94 for Mr. C.O. Straker, replaced an earlier timber hotel constructed' in 1857 and burnt down on the 26th March 1893. It was originally the North Grant Hotel, but in 1934 the name was changed to Centenary Hotel and in 1960 it became the Ballarat Hotel.
The building has unusual arcaded chimneys and a late window treatment with stilted segmental arches, more common of the 1880's. The string courses, hood moulding and rendered painted band work provide interest and serve to lighten the design.
The rendered signwriting strip at ground floor level has been covered by an inappropriate large fascia, which destroys the continuity of the facade.
The corner entrance has been altered, with two large windows replacing smaller windows and doors. An early illustration shows the building with the original facade intact. The corner awning is a later addition.
This corner building is an important streetscape element, with the upper two floors intact, in good condition and of imposing design and detailing. The inappropriate alterations at ground floor level destroy the original design concept.NORTH GRANT HOTEL - Integrity
