NATIONAL BANK OF AUSTRALASIA (FORMER) - Physical Description 1
The National Sank of Australasia commenced operations in Buninyong as an agency under the management of Mr Worth. Early banking activities were undertaken within Thomas Adams' Post Office, Store. In 1859, Crown Allotment 1 of Section 9 was purchased from Adams, however the present bank building was not constructed until 1866, for the contract sum of 2,184 pounds. The architect for the bank and premises is not known.
The bank is constructed of brick with a slate roof and comprised of a Banking Chamber, Managers Residence of six rooms, kitchen and servant, Quarters
It is constructed in the conservative classical style, featuring a portico and first floor balcony, Banded rustication to the portico and quoining articulate the building.
The Buninyong Branch closed in 1942, as part of the rationalisation of activities during World War 2, and the building is now used as a gallery.
