Statement of Significance
What is significant?
Hillingdon, 383 Glenferrie Road, Malvern designed by F.G. England and constructed in 1919, is significant. The significant attributes are the Arts & Crafts style form, materials and detailing of the flats as designed by England, the generous front garden setback to Glenferrie Road, which contains a mature Liquidambar, and the rendered brick entry gate posts.
Later alterations and additions and other buildings are not significant.
How is it significant?
Hillingdon is of local historic, architectural and aesthetic significance to the City of Stonnington.
Why is it significant?
Historically, Hillingdon is one of the oldest residential flats in the City of Stonnington. As the first residential flats built on Glenferrie Road it illustrates the first phase of residential flats development after World War I, which was concentrated along the electric tramway routes. (Criterion A)
Architecturally, Hillingdon is a fine example of 'Luxury' residential flats in the Arts & Crafts style. Aesthetically, it is distinguished by its setting with a generous semicircular entrance drive entered through original architectural gate posts, and by well-designed details such as the two-storey entrance porch with an arched openings and buttressed piers. The aesthetic qualities are further enhanced by the mature Liquidambar in the front garden. (Criterion D & E)

HILLINGDON - Physical Description 1
Hillingdon, 383 Glenferrie Road, Malvern, is a two-storey residentialflats with rendered masonry walls. It is set well back from the road, behind a garden with a generous semi-circular gravelled entrance drive. A mature Liquidambar is a notable planting in the front garden. The high paling front fence sits between tall masonry fence/gate posts at either end. These posts mimic elements of the front porch; the shaft is finished in roughcast render, with a smooth render coping, and there is a battered 'buttress' to the outer face.
The flats building has a long facade, set beneath a transverse gable roof. Chimneys are tapered and finished in roughcast render, typical of the Arts & Crafts style. The walls are finished in roughcast render, with a smooth render band at the base. At the centre of the facade is a two-storey porch set below a hipped gable roof. The lower level has a large, semicircular opening with a solid balustrade, set between heavy, buttressed piers. The upper level of the porch is supported on short paired timber posts on rendered piers.
The arch of the central porch is echoed in arched openings at either end of the ground floor facade to additional entries. These two arched openings are sheltered by projecting balconies, resting on timber beams with timber shingles to the face of the balustrade.
Windows to the ground floor facade are triple box windows with diamond leadlights to the upper sashes. The central front door is also original, with glazing to the upper part and ledged boards below. The entry doors to the two side entries were not sighted.
Alterations include the infilling of the two arched side openings with glazed doors and windows, infilling of the balconies above these openings, replacement of two sets of triple diamond-light sashes to the first-floor facade and over-painting of the originally unpainted rendered walls. In addition, the profile of the roof tiles do not appear to date from the 1920s, and are likely a later replacement.
