Statement of Significance
The former Ascot Vale Masonic Hall later the Gordon Masonic Hall, was erected at nos. 32-34 Maribyrnong Road Moonee Ponds, in 1886-87 to the design of local architect Joseph C. M. Cowan. It has aesthetic and social importance. Its aesthetic importance (Criterion E) arises from its somewhat severe Classical Revival design which is expressive of the conservatism of the Masonic Lodge and compares with similar buildings in View Street, Bendigo of 1873; and High street, Echuca of 1907-08. It is an unusual public building of its type in the Municipality (Criterion B). It is important also for the value placed on the building by masons in the area (Criterion G) and for its association with Joseph. C. M. Cowan, especially on account of it being one of his major commissions.
