Statement of Significance
Architecturally, a successful and picturesque combination of ornament and massing, a distinguished variation on an established suburban villa type also part of a streetscape: of regional importance.
Historically, a large example of speculative building by a financing society during the 'property boom period': of local importance.

HOUSE (KHIO) - Physical Description 1
An unusual, ornately decorated and former, face brick suburban villa, with a strong stylistic combination of Italian and English Medieval period sources. A parapeted entrance porch provides both an upper-level balcony (accessed through double archways) and a three dimensional element to interplay with the thrust window bays and overall fragmentation of the form. This fragmentation has been achieved by the picturesque use of roof gables (again with carved valences), set against a slated transverse roof gable. The brickwork has been painted; the front fence replaced; and a security grille placed across the entry alcove.
A major contributor to the Chaucer Street streetscape - It is probable that 28 and 34 Chaucer Street came from the same designer.
