Statement of Significance
The two similar detached houses at 27 and 29 Sydney Street, Ascot Vale, were in existence by 1892. They are aesthetically important. This importance (Criterion E) is established by their stylistic exuberance epitomising the excesses of the Land Boom period and demonstrating that money could be lavished with dramatic effect on smaller villas as well as the mansions of the commercial classes. The broken cement pediments and porches combine with the use of polychrome brickwork to impart distinction to both buildings.

Two similar Boom Style detached polychrome brick villas with wing walls and balustraded parapets in the terraced form having a protruding central round arched porch with surmounting broken curved pediment in the form of an aedicule in the parapet above. Dark brown body bricks are relieved with whites and reds. Verandahs either side of the porch are concave with cast iron lace ornamentation arid there are coupled double hung windows also on either side reinforcing the symmetry of the designs.
