Statement of Significance
What is significant?
The house once known as 'Himera' at 37 Hoddle Street, Essendon, built for Arthur Thomas Madders in 1908, is significant.
How is it significant?
The house at 37 Hoddle Street, Essendonis of local historic and aesthetic significance to the City of Moonee Valley.
Why is it significant?
It is historically significant (Criterion A) because it demonstrates together with other comparable houses of the period that Essendon in the vicinity of the railway station consolidated its reputation as a prestigious middle class suburban location prior to the Great War.
It is aesthetically significant (Criterion E) as a highly picturesque villa of its type, the juxtaposition of the gable ends and their treatments being hallmarks of the Federation villa.

HOUSE (HIMERA) - Physical Description 1
A richly decorated Federation Period villa with the picturesque terra cotta tiled roof characteristic of its period as the dominant element. Rough cast gable ends are half timbered in a lattice pattern or with vertical boards and there are tall corbelled chimneys with terra cotta pots. There are window bays with leadlit upper sashes either side of the recessed entry which is protected by a small plain timber posted porch. The walls have white tuck pointed bricks with rough cast upper sections and banding.
Condition: Sound. Integrity: High, entry porch may have been simplified, later sympathetic carport.
