Statement of Significance
SIGNIFICANCE:
One of the earliest cottages in Hamilton, showing an influence from Portland and Port Fairy which was extended during the Federation period.
STATEMENT OF SIGNIFICANCE
Crathie
6 Clarke Street
This house has local significance as one of the oldest stone cottages in Hamilton and for its historical associations with William Hoare, an early local bricklayer and builder, from 1866 or earlier. ([i]) He could well have been its first owner and designer. It reflects a very early style of architecture and can be compared with the Georgian (actually Regency) cottages of Portland and Port Fairy. It is probably the best and one of the few examples in Hamilton of this type. The cottage was extended in the Federation period without detriment to the simplicity of its facade. The house has been altered only superficially and is in good condition.
[i] Hamilton Rate Book 1866, No. 265 (NAV 15 pounds). By 1868 the NAV had increased to 33 pounds.
