Statement of Significance
SIGNIFICANCE: »Part of the Lutheran Church complex, the manse fits in with the post WWII development of this precinct. The period garden complements the building.
STATEMENT OF SIGNIFICANCE
Evangelical Lutheran Manse (new)
12 Thompson Street (c1956).
This building has local significance as part of the Evangelical Lutheran Church complex, which also includes the 1958 church, an earlier manse at 46 Martin Street (1880), originally a private residence, and a church hall at the rear (1939). ([i]) Its simple design reflects the probity of the congregation and the period. Its period garden complements the house which is typical for its form, details and materials but with a symmetrical facade and simple hip roof giving a sense of stability which is not often found in designs of the period. The house is substantially intact and in excellent condition. The house complements the other buildings in this precinct which all date from the same decade.
[i] Garden, Don, Hamilton, p 222, 231; Hamilton Rate Book 1880, No. 164 (W Irwin, owner/occupier, house, NAV 15 pounds) relates to 46 Martin Street; HSA DP No. 758 (relates to hall at rear and new church and manse); Hamilton Spectator, 9 November 1939; One Hundred Years of Blessings.
