Statement of Significance
SIGNIFICANCE: This is one of the better examples of the early 20th century conversion of a 19th Century house. Key site for Botanic Gardens.
STATEMENT OF SIGNIFICANCE
Bungalow
56 Kennedy Street
On one of the earliest residential blocks sold by the Crown which was purchased by Acheson French, this building incorporates a nineteenth century house which has been converted into a bungalow. Of Local significance, it shows influences from not just the Federation period but also the formative Arts and Crafts movement which influenced domestic architecture at the turn of the century. The conversion included reroofing the building, rendering of the walls with rough cast, converting the front door to be assymmetrical and the introduction of a projecting gable. This conversion is of interest because it predates the fashions for the Californian bungalow and the picturesque style of the next two decades.
Several outbuildings survive at the rear of the site. The house is significantly intact from the date of its conversion and is in good condition. Being on a corner this is a key site for Botanic Gardens area.
