Statement of Significance
SIGNIFICANCE: One of the best examples of the Californian Bungalow style in Hamilton.
STATEMENT OF SIGNIFICANCE
Birdseye's Dental Surgery
47 Thompson Street
This Californian Bungalow is of local architectural significance as one of the best examples of its type in Hamilton. It was built on land originally sold by the Crown at auction to T Smith in 1852. A small brick house preceeded it. Built in the 1920s, the present house exhibits all the classic details and materials of the Australian interpretation of this all-pervasive West Coast American influence. It shows the deep verandah, horizontal emphasis and combination of gable roof forms which are distinctive to the style. For many years the house has been used as a dental surgery and its conversion, like several of its neighbours, represents the expansion of the Gray Street commercial area into surrounding streets.
The house is significantly intact and is in excellent condition. It can be compared with the best example of the style in Hamilton, Fleetwood, 21 Gray Street. (i)
