Statement of Significance
The buildings know as the Junction Buildings at 950 to 942 Mt Alexander and nos 3 to 17 Napier Street were built by the developer, Charles R. Walker between 1921 and 1923. They are representative buildings of their type and period, recalling the period when the (Napier Street) shopping centre in the vicinity of Essendon Station was established to service its suburban context (Criterion A), whilst their prominent corner position and design give the buildings landmark status in their local context.

JUNCTION BUILDINGS - Physical Description 1
A row of five single storeyed interwar shops with cantilevered verandahs built in rendered brick work. Usually hipped roofs behind a parapet wall. Cantilevered verandah roofs.
The parapet is continuous but each shop is defined by an (mostly unpainted) ornate rendered face to the parapet. The party walls are accentuated by a vertical rendered panel that projects from the parapet. The parapet is rendered except at no. 19 where the parapet has been painted over.
Degree off ornamentation is dependent on the integrity of the shopfronts. Brass (or metal) covered timber frames, glazed ceramic tiles, original timber doors, extensive leadlight glazing, decorative terrazzo flooring only remains in No 15.
Except for no. 17, the shopfronts have a high degree of intactness. The central shop (no.15) is narrower than the others of the same width. The original copper window frames, black tiles with black and white banding to the stall boards are still in good condition. Some of the lead lighting has been removed in No 11.
The two storey corner building has been defaced at ground level.
The shopfronts off Mt Alexander Road have been replaced by anodized aluminium shopfronts. Other than a textured coating, the parapets are intact.
The two storey end building displays similar rendering motives and is largely unchanged.
