Statement of Significance
The former Coburg Court House, designed by Edwin Evan Smith and constructed in 1929-30, at 1A-1B Main Street, Coburg.
How is it significant?
The former Coburg Court House, 1A-1B Main Street, Coburg is of local historic and aesthetic significance to the City of Moreland.
How is it significant?
Of historical significance for its association with the civic development of Coburg and the significant growth of this area that led it to being proclaimed a city in 1922. (AHC Criterion A.4)
Of aesthetic significance as an intact representative example of a suburban court house constructed in 1929-30 to a design in the Interwar Free Classical style by the Chief Architect of the Public Works Department, E. Evan Smith. (AHC Criteria E.1 & H.1)

COBURG COURT HOUSE (FORMER) - Physical Description 1
The former Coburg Court House is in a stripped Free Classical style with a painted rendered facade and a dominant terracotta tiled roof visible behind the front parapet. Asymmetrical in plan, the projecting main body of the building features pilasters with stylised ashlar detailing, a projecting cornice and a parapet surmounted by volutes above a coat of arms in relief. The entrance set back at one side features a centrally placed doorway under a hipped tile roof.
