House, Newall Street, MARNOO - Physical Description 1
The house in Newall Street, Marnoo, neighbours other predominantly single storey, horizontal weatherboard residential buildings with pitched galvanised corrugated iron roofs. This building is generally in accord with the form, construction and setbacks of the significant places visually connected to it. It is set on averaged sized corner allotment for the area with a sizeable front setback and narrow side setbacks. There is a rudimentary front garden that consists of open grassed areas and occasional plantings. The front and side are bound by a timber post, tubular steel rail and cyclone wire fence, and is approximately 1000 mm high.
There is also an early scrolled metal gate on the front boundary. The transitional Late Victorian and Edwardian design of the house suggests that it was constructed in the early 20th century.
The asymmetrical, single storey, horizontal weatherboard, transitional Late Victorian and Edwardian styled house is characterised by an early steeply pitched hipped roof form, together with a minor rear gable that projects at the side (possibly introduced at an early period), and an altered return skillion verandah that projects at the front and side. These roof forms are clad in galvanised corrugated iron. An early partially painted brick chimney with a corbelled top adorns the roofline at the rear. Narrow overhangs are features of the eaves.
The front section of the house is symmetrical in design with an early central timber framed doorway having an early four panelled timber door, sidelights and highlights. Flanking the doorway are early timber framed double hung windows.
The return verandah appears to have replaced an earlier verandah and is supported by timber columns.
The rear gable has turned timber finial at the apex of the gable and decorative gable infill (panelling and battening).
