Statement of Significance

What is significant?
The Abruzzo Club building at 377 Lygon Street, Brunswick East is significant. The upper facade, and in particular the sharp delineation between the smooth sections and sections in 'pebble look' render with raised cement lettering spelling 'ABRUZZO CLUB', is significant. Its ongoing community use is also of significance. Its internal layout and paint scheme are not significant.

How is it significant?
The Abbruzzo Club is of local historical and social significance to the City of Moreland.

Why is it significant?
The Abruzzo Club is historically significant as part of the Italian migrant post-war narrative, and is associated in particular with migrants from the Italian region of Abruzzo. (Criterion A) The Abruzzo Club has social significance as a post-war Italian club which has been in use by the local Italian community for over 50 years, first by Abruzzesi migrants and then by the general Italian-Australian community. (Criterion G)

      Abruzzo Club - Physical Description 1

      The Abruzzo Club is a two-storey postwar modernist building constructed of brick and concrete. The building fronts Lygon Street with a smooth rendered and painted facade with one section of 'pebble look' render painted in white. Over the top of the render is raised cement lettering spelling 'ABRUZZO CLUB'. The lower facade is highly altered, with various new aluminium window openings, a verandah to the gaming room, modern white brick sized tiles and a box canopy covering the entrance.

      To the north of the building is an outdoor seating area in timber and concrete. The brick construction of the building is exposed on this elevation. The site is bound by a rear laneway.

      The building underwent renovations in 2017 and is in good condition overall.
