Statement of Significance
The house known as "Greenock" at 37 McCarron Parade, Essendon, was in existence in 1892 when it was occupied by John George Charles. It has historic and aesthetic importance. It is historically important (Criterion A) to the extent that it demonstrates together with other examples of its period the first phase in the development of Essendon west of the railway line as a suburb of the metropolis capable of attracting prestigious villa development. It is aesthetically important (Criterion E) as an imposing bi-chromatic villa demonstrating the influence of the North Italian Renaissance on villa design towards the end of the nineteenth century, the elements of the projecting wing being highly demonstrative of this characteristic.
