French Avenue - Physical Description 1
French Avenue comprises an intact group of predominantly Inter-war timber bungalows, which are related in terms of their scale (single storey), siting (detached, front garden setback), detailing, roof forms (multi-gabled corrugated iron, porches) and materials (weatherboard, some stuccoed). Many are complemented by mature gardens. Individually notable examples include:
- Nos. 5, which has a distinctive triple-gabled form and is quite intact. It is complemented by a sympathetic low timber & wire front fence with lych gate and (possibly original) driveway gates.
- No. 10, which is quite intact. It has a hip and gable roof that incorporates the front verandah that extends low over the front porch and is supported by paired posts on substantial brick piers. The windows feature diamond pattern panes in the upper section and there is a bay window set into one corner. The square top picket fence is sympathethic but not original.
Many have only minor modifications (e.g brick cladding being the most drastic) but all exhibit consistent style. Front fences are low, and some appear to be original. Only No. 20 at the end of the street has been constructed during the postwar era. The houses at Nos. 2 and 4 have been altered in detail, while a rather overwhelming two storey addition has recently been made to No. 6.French Avenue - Physical Conditions
